The expenses bill for senior managers at the BBC dropped by 15 per cent last year, according to the broadcaster.

Expenses figures were published this week for the final quarter of 2010/11, which the BBC said shows a total bill of £629,000, down from £736,000 the previous year.

The broadcaster also claims the paybill for senior managers, those earning more than £150,000 a year, has now been cut by £17.6 million, a reduction of 22.4 per cent.

The reductions are part of a commitment by the BBC to reduce senior manager pay by 25 per cent by the end of the year.

It has also pledged to cut headcount of this group by 20 per cent by December, claiming in this week's figures that since August 2009, a reduction of 18.3 per cent has been achieved, which equates to 117 senior managers.

Last month, new chairman of the BBC Trust Chris Patten vowed to ban bonuses and other perks for senior BBC managers.

He also pledged to continue to cut the number of senior managers down to "more like 1 per cent" of the workforce by 2015 at the latest.

This would "create a smaller group of people more clearly accountable for spending the licence fee", he said.

According to the most recent salary figures published by the BBC, the total bill for senior BBC managers within in its News Group division exceeded £16 million.
