Michael Crick moves from Newsnight to Channel 4 News

BBC Newsnight political editor Michael Crick is to join Channel 4 News as political correspondent, according to the broadcaster.

In an announcement yesterday (19 July), Channel 4 News said Crick will be taking on the role previously held by Cathy Newman, who is due to join Jon Snow and Krishnan Guru-Murthy as a regular presenter.

This follows a series of moves by BBC journalists to Channel 4 News. Fellow Newsnight journalist Jackie Long was named as Channel 4 News' new social affairs editor in May, while BBC World News America anchor Matt Frei was named as Washington correspondent.

Channel 4 called Crick's move a "homecoming", as he was a founding member of the Channel 4 News team when it launched in 1982, before moving to the BBC in 1990.

"It's thrilling to have an established, experienced name like Michael join our team," editor Jim Gray was quoted in the announcement.

"He has a remarkable track record of finding things out that people don't want unearthed. He is a formidable investigative journalist. With him in this role, and Gary continuing to lead our coverage as political editor, we have the perfect political team in place."

Crick was also quoted as saying he is sad to leave Newsnight but it is "fantastic to be returning to my ITN roots".
