Sheffield Hallam students

Journalism students from Sheffield Hallam University are preparing for work experience with a difference after being specially selected as volunteers for the Commonwealth Games press team.

A group of 28 students from both undergraduate and postgraduate courses within the university's journalism department will be setting off for India for the games which start in October.

During the event they will be given the opportunity to work in the press and broadcasting centre which supplies information to more than 5,000 media representatives.

One of the selected students, Daniel Young, 21, has also secured a position guest editing the education supplement of the Times of India while he is there.

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime and this amazing work experience will really help me to stand out when I look for my first job. I am looking forward to experiencing a new culture and to working with world class journalists, broadcasters and, of course, athletes, during my time in India.

"Very few people get the chance to be at the heart of a global sporting competition and I am fascinated to learn more about how an event of this size and complexity is managed and delivered."
