Craig Oliver, currently head of network programmes at ITV News, has been announced as the new editor of BBC One's Ten O'Clock news.

Mr Oliver’s move to the BBC flagship bulletin follows the departure of Kevin Bakhurst, who was recently appointed controller of BBC News 24.

"It's a fantastic opportunity to work on such a respected programme with some journalists I really admire," said Mr Oliver.

"However, ITN has been my home for 12 years and I will miss working with the wonderful people there."

He joined the ITN Training Scheme in 1993, later being appointed producer of ITV's News at Ten. In 1997 he joined the Channel Five News as programme editor, before returning to ITV News in 1999 as senior programme editor of the early evening news programme.

After a short spell at Channel Four News in 2002, he returned to ITV News in 2003 as head of output and more recently head of network programmes.

Peter Horrocks, BBC head of television news, said: "Craig was the outstanding candidate in a strong field and makes for an important new member to the already strong team of editors in BBC Television News."
