Jobs at risk following Northcliffe shake-up in Stoke-on-Trent

Up to 14 editorial jobs are under threat in Staffordshire following the announcement of a restructure at the Stoke-on-Trent-based Northcliffe Media title the Sentinel.

According to a statement the daily paper will see its photographic, sport, design and features departments reorganised and the future of its district editions placed under consideration.

Mike Sassi, editor of the Sentinel, said in a release: "The Sentinel is undertaking a comprehensive review of its business as it attempts to find better ways to serve its readers and advertisers. We hope the planned changes would put us in a better position to achieve future revenue growth and secure sustained profits."

The Northcliffe Media proposals also include moving the sub-editing and design of Central Independent News and Media (CINM)'s weekly titles back to Tamworth from their current base at the Sentinel, where they have been based since 2009.

The move would place the subs and designers back under the same roof as the weekly papers’ editorial staff and follows the dismantling of other regional hubs across the UK.

Gary Phelps, group editor of CINM, said in a release: "The return of all of the subbing of our titles to Tamworth brings our entire news operation under one roof, allowing us to better use the resources at our disposal and ensuring our news gathering and design teams can easily share vital local knowledge."

The latest figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulation placed the Sentinel’s daily circulation at 48,155, making it the 12th largest regional daily newspaper.
