The thrill and variety of freelance journalism can be what attracts many to the trade. But it can be tough to know how to get started.

Freelance foreign correspondent Molly McCluskey offers five pieces of advice on making the switch to freelance in an article for Poynter.

Chasing down payments is part of the job, but she says the most important step is to stop considering yourself as a freelancer, but instead a small business owner.

"I'm a journalist and editor, yes, but in order to do that on a freelance basis, I’m also a salesperson, a strategic planner, a communications specialist, a grants manager, and a bounty hunter," she writes.
