Investigative journalism projects involve meticulous research and planning, but it can be hard to work within a time frame or even begin interviewing sources with little or no funding.
Grants from foundations and organisations such as the European Journalism Centre, as well as crowdsourcing, are an option, but there are other things you can do to raise money for an investigation.
In this post from the Global Investigative Journalism Conference, Abby Ellis gives some recommendations for building relationships with potential donors.
Her advice includes measuring the impact of your work based on the interaction and effect it has across different social media platforms, fundraising continuously rather than just as an emergency measure and updating donors throughout the research and reporting process, not just when the project has been finalised.
