Editing your own stories can be difficult as it's usually harder to spot your own mistakes than somebody else's.

And as reporters' jobs now increasingly include publishing directly to the web on blogs or social media without necessarily going through a copy editor first, how can you make sure no mistakes are made?

Jessica Eggert of the American Journalism Review put together a list of seven tips from copy editors to help journalists edit their own pieces if a professional editor isn't on hand.

Some useful suggestions include changing the font of the text or just the font size, as well as reading the copy out loud.
