He succeeds Paul Potts who is to focus on his role as chief executive of The PA Group - owners of the Press Association. A role that was combined with his position as editor-in-chief in February 2000.
Mr Watson's new role, which commences in January, will see him heading the strategic and commercial development of the Press Association, in particular focusing on the group's expansion in the digital markets.
Before joining the Press Association, he was editor at the Yorkshire Post for 13 years and also a journalist on Granada's World in Action.
Mr Watson, commenting on his appointment, said: "After his hugely successful twelve years as editor-in-chief, Paul Potts will be a hard act to follow, but I'm very much looking forward to meeting the challenge.
"It's a great privilege to be taking on the role, particularly at such an exciting time in the evolution of the Press Association.
"Just as PA has always been at the heart of the traditional media, over the next few years we aim to ensure it is also at the centre of the evolving digital landscape."
