Medical discussion boards, free software downloads and special offers now feature on the Health-news.co.uk website targeted at 'the entire health professional community'. Improved navigability is also a feature of the new-look site which is free to access.
Health-media.net said that 850,000 professionals could take advantage of their offer of a free WAP-enabled mobile phone in a deal launched jointly by Carphone Warehouse and the site. The offer represents a £155 discount on a package that includes a connection with BT Cellnet.
Health-Media.Net chief executive Tony Fitzpatrick said healthcare professionals lead busy lives and may not always be able to access a computer. 'However, they still need access to vital information and up-to-the-minute news so that they can provide better health advice wherever they are.'
Health-Media.net's marketing drive coincided with bad publicity for WAP technology. Commentators criticised its reliability and slammed mobile companies - particularly BT Cellnet - for over-hyping its usefulness. (see WAP technology fails to live up to its hype)
In defence, Carphone Warehouse said WAP had 'huge potential'. However, it recommended customers to visit an independent retailer to get impartial advice and to ensure that handsets and services are tailored to their needs.
Despite the criticism of WAP, demand for the joint offer was strong. Following the launch, it was reported that 130,000 healthcare workers had applied for a free phone.
