In an uprecedented move, US online correspondents are being given credentials to cover the build up to war in Iraq.

One of the first, Ben Arnoldy of Christian Science Monitor, is already writing daily dispatches from a US air base in Kuwait. His publication was offered two 'embedded correspondent' slots by the US Department of Defense; the other slot has gone to a print reporter.

Mr Arnoldy will be primarily operating as an online reporter and photographer but he will also write longer features for the print edition of the Monitor.

His online articles have adopted a more informal and subjective style than is normal in the print edition. He will also be answering questions posted online and participating in live web chats with readers.

Mr Arnoldy is equipped with a laptop computer, satellite phone, and a digital camera, making it possible to file copy and pictures from any location.
