The BBC has revised its editorial guidelines for broadcast, print and new media content, making the entire document easier to use and fully available for all BBC website users.

Changes reflect Ofcom's new broadcast code and the move towards digital and multimedia publishing.

The guidelines include advice on standards expected in privacy, accuracy and audience interaction and are to be referred to by editorial staff across the BBC.

Revisions from the previous 2000 edition include a commitment to accuracy rather than speed, and the introduction of a delay in live broadcast coverage of sensitive stories such as hijacking or kidnap.

"The guidelines are part of our contract with our audiences," said Stephen Whittle, controller of editorial policy at the BBC.

"These are our editorial ethics and values and the standards we set for ourselves. We intend to live and be judged by them."
