The BBC's news web site has become the UK’s most popular source of online news, according to new research that reveals it receives more than two million hits per month.

The survey, from Neilsen/NetRatings, showed that during June its hit count topped the three million mark.

As far as online newspapers go, guardianunlimited.co.uk is the most popular, with more than one million regular visitors each month. Cnn.com, ft.com and telegraph.co.uk follow with an average of half a million each.

The research also found that users go to different sites for different types of content. The Guardian is particularly popular for its media section, while most Telegraph users go to the site for sports news.

Ft.com users, however, now spend less time on the site following the introduction of subscription charges for some of its services last July.
