The British Library has announced a second online archiving project in as many weeks, that aims to preserve around 6,000 of the UK's best websites.

The two-year project, run by the new UK Web Archiving Consortium (UKWAC), aims to preserve valuable scholarly, cultural, and scientific web resources for future generations.

The consortium is made up of six leading libraries and research groups including the British Library, the National Archives and the Wellcome Trust.

UKWAC claims that the lifespan of web materials is typically around 44 days - the same life expectancy as a house fly.

Work started this month and the first stage is due to go live in January 2005.
