The news of London's successful bid to host the 2012 Olympic games brought several major UK news sites to a temporary standstill today.

The announcement was made at about 12.50pm GMT and for the following 20 minutes the home pages of several prominent news sites were slow to load, with the actual story pages not loading at all.

Testing from our own Brighton-based office, we found the worst-affected sites to be BBC Online and Guardian Unlimited, although both appeared to be working normally within half an hour of the announcement.

All the major UK news sites carried the news almost immediately, almost certainly using pre-prepared material (the Reuters.com story carried a posting time of 8.00am).

Even by 2.15pm, news.google.co.uk had failed to list the news as a top story, burying it instead under a sports heading a long way down its home page.
