Virginia Wheeler, defence editor of the Sun, has today been arrested by officers working on Operation Elveden, the investigation into allegations of inappropriate payments to police.

Police said they arrested a 32-year-old woman "by appointment" and "on suspicion of corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906 and aiding and abetting misconduct in a public office (contrary to common law) and conspiracy in relation to both offences".

Wheeler was bailed until May, pending further police enquiries.

This is the 23rd arrest as part of Operation Elveden, the operation set up after News International provided documents to the Operation Weeting probe, which is investigating phone hacking.
