Time-lapse

If you're not beginning to feel at least a little bit festive yet, look away now.

Photographer Dan Rubin shot this time-lapse of the 40-foot Christmas tree going up outside Somerset House using just his iPhone.

The ice rink, fairy lights and Nutcracker soundtrack will have you reaching for mince pies in no time (as if you need an excuse).

Time-lapse occurs when film frames are captured at a much slower rate than usual. When the resulting video is viewed at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster.

The technique can feel a bit gimmicky in some situations, but used sparingly and with the right subject matter it's a great tool to add to your mobile journalism skill set.

In this article on The Telegraph site Rubin shares five tips for using the time-lapse function available on iOS 8, including advice on focus and exposure, battery life and editing apps.

And just in case you were wondering, there's only 43 days to go until Christmas.
