Data journalism doesn't have to cost your newsroom all that much. There are plenty of free tools out there that can help you analyse and visualise data, and some of the paid-for ones don't necessarily need to break the bank.

Nils Mulvad, a co-founder of the Global Investigative Journalism Network, wrote this article about a data-training session in Slovenia and outlined some of the tools recommended there.

Aside from mentioning staples such as Google Fusion Tables, the piece also includes suggestions for extracting data out of PDFs, and a tutorial for OpenRefine, a data-cleaning tool.
