The 2016 presidential campaign in the United States saw reporters who covered both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions receive special safety training, highlighting an increased level of concern surrounding the events.

In this article from IJNet, international journalist Sherry Ricchiardi summarises the advice of Frank Smyth, director of Global Journalist Security (GJS), whose team has been providing training sessions to raise awareness of civil unrests, as well as newsroom safety seminars for journalists covering the conventions.

Amongst other tips, he suggests journalists "put aside competitive pressure and form teams to watch each other's backs", and hide their press passes to ensure they are not stolen.
