Guardian News & Media has named Janine Gibson as the site's new editor.

She will be responsible for the day-to-day editing of the site and will report to director of digital content, Emily Bell, and  editor-in-chief, Alan Rusbridger, a release from the Guardian said.

"I'm delighted with this appointment. Janine brings a wealth of experience in print and online to this new role and working with our editorial team she will continue to build on our position as the UK's most popular newspaper website," said Bell in the release.

Gibson is currently editor-in-chief of Media Guardian and G3 editor of the Guardian.

She began her career in trade magazines - at Televisual and Broadcast. She was then media correspondent at the Independent before taking up the same position at the Guardian in 1998.

Gibson later became media editor of the Guardian and was the launch editor of mediaguardian.co.uk. For the past 18 months she has acted as executive editor of guardian.co.uk.
