Technology giant Siemens has won a £2bn deal to produce technology services for the BBC over the next decade.

Siemens will work on projects including IT infrastructure, telephony, channel distribution and broadcast systems as well as hosting of the BBC.co.uk website.

The contract is subject to final approval from BBC governors and the UK government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport, but is expected to save the BBC around £30m per year.

As part of the deal, Siemens Business Services has acquired BBC Technology, a commercial wing of the corporation. BBC Technology runs the group's international IT infrastructure, as well as projects including the Creative Archive, broadband Olympic coverage and modernisation for BBC News.

"This is an exciting time for the media industry," said Tom White, UK managing director of Siemens Business Services.

"We are well-positioned at the forefront of an emerging market, where IT, communications and broadcast technologies converge."
