Under the three-year research project, the chair will investigate multimedia reporting, newsroom technologies and distribution platforms.
The research will inform the work of students on UCLan's digital journalism production course and ultimately, the project will lead to an institute of digital journalism to be based at UCLan.
"UCLan's partnership with Johnston Press presents us with a unique opportunity to investigate, challenge and inform development and debate in digital applications," said Mike Ward, head of the department of journalism.
"The fruits of the partnership will be relevant, accessible and forward-looking analysis. Together we will produce materials for teaching, knowledge transfer and further research."
