Downing Street has rebutted allegations that government officials illegally hacked into the BBC's internal systems in an attempt to influence news before it was broadcast.

The rumour started when BBC journalists noticed that government staff appeared to know the contents of their reports in advance.

World Affairs Editor John Simpson claimed he was certain the hacking had taken place, even though it remains unproven.
