Emap's Construction Plus division this week began to charge for some of its online content.

The web editions of Architects' Journal, Construction News and New Civil Engineer have all made the move in an attempt to gain profit, following in the wake of another Emap web site, Total Telecom (www.totaltele.com) which introduced subscription charges earlier this year.

The majority of content on these sites will now have to be paid for by annual subscription and will cost from £29 to £80, depending on whether members already subscribe to the print editions.

News content has doubled and the Construction Plus archive extended by a further 10 years.

Subscription charges were introduced for Construction Plus’ weekly email newsletter in April this year, though were scrapped later in the summer. The newsletter now forms part of the overall subscription package.

Although it is only expected that 20% of the current traffic to the sites will pay for subscriptions, Construction Marketing Director, Ross Sturley remains hopeful. "More than half of our unique users visit more than four times a month. We're now about to test whether the construction sector is ready to pay for information online."
