The Government's much-anticipated review of BBC online is due to be released in the next few weeks, according to The Guardian.

Led by former Trinity Mirror chief executive Phillip Graf, the review explores the performance of the BBC site, its market impact and the future role for the service.

Mr Graf's review began in August 2003 and was handed to ministers at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport at the end of April.

The report is expected to suggest ways to limit the commercial impact of the BBC's web activities, possibly by 'topslicing' - which would allow commercial rivals to compete for public service funding.
