New research into successful online business magazines has found that many have problems finding staff with the right skills.

About a quarter of respondents to the International Periodical Press Federation (FIPP) survey said they had difficulty finding employees with the right skill sets, as well as facing resistance by print staff to working on web products.

The bad image of the internet since the dot.com crash of 2000 was also cited by many as a barrier to success.

The study appears to bolster current thinking that paid-for content represents the future for web magazines, with more than half having a subscription-only section to their sites. This member-only content was primarily made up of news updates, archives, databases and other editorial material not contained in the magazines.

Three-quarters of these successful web sites were also updated daily, and sometimes throughout the day.

Publishers from around the world said they believed integration between on and offline products was the key to greater success. But they added that web sites should offer different content from their sister print publications.
