Google searches out new ad territory
Google has bought advertising space in several US technology print magazines as part of a trial programme of print advertising. The ads will run in several titles including PC Magazine, Maximum PC and MacAddict.
A Google spokesman told journalism.co.uk that the ad format will be a cross between display and classified ads, and that advertisers would be paying less than they would if they advertised directly with the magazine.
Four to five companies will share each ad, which will be branded as 'Ads by Google' with 'Google advertisers offer these products and services' at the bottom of the page.
In a statement about the print ads, Google said: "This limited test is part of Google's continuing effort to develop new ways to provide effective and useful advertising to advertisers, publishers and users."
There are no plans at present to introduce the ads in UK titles, although a spokesperson added that Google "is always testing different avenues".
