International Women's Day, 8 March 2001, will be marked with the launch of Worldwoman - a pilot 'e-newspaper' written by women journalists from 24 countries around the world.

Worldwoman will be online at www.worldwoman.net , the brainchild of broadcast journalist Lesley Riddoch. Ms Riddoch, currently a presenter on BBC Radio Scotland, was formerly assistant editor of the Scotsman and it was there that she edited Scotswoman - a special edition produced by the Scotsman's female staff on International Women's day 1995.

Currently applying for charitable status, Worldwoman.net aims to encourage female journalists in developing countries to join a virtual newsroom and to tackle the kind of stories and tasks that their gender normally excludes them from.

"We could have a team in Kenya as the newsroom, a team in Ghana as the foreign desk and a team in Zimbabwe as the business desk," Ms Riddoch said.

"Perhaps even a health page in India, a books page from Ireland and a farming page from Sweden. The web is the limit!"

Funding is now being sought for a further project to be run in three African states in Autumn.
