After choosing keywords such as company names, subscribers will receive emails whenever news stories break about their chosen subjects.
The launch will be promoted with a major marketing drive, in an attempt to boost the number of subscribers to FT.com, which currently stands at around 57,000.
FT.com contains a mix of free and paid-for content and offers two levels of subscription at GBP70 and GBP195 respectively.
• Google News last month launched its own free email news alert service. Users can enter search terms into the Google News alert system and select the frequency with which they receive email updates containing links to stories matching their search terms.
Although it is limited to 50 news alerts per email address, the service does offer journalists a good way to track breaking stories and to monitor competing news sources.
