The best examples of internet journalism will be recognised with a new set of awards established by the Online News Association and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

The ONA awards will join a clutch of prestigious awards administered by Columbia including the Pulitzer Prizes and the US National Magazine Awards. The ONA - a new professional body for online journalists - said the inaugural contest would be launched this year for work produced between July 1999 and June 2000. The deadline for entries is 28 August 2000.

'We believe these awards will be a major step towards one of our most important goals - recognising and encouraging journalistic excellence in this new medium,' said Rich Jaroslovsky, president of the ONA and managing editor of Wall Street Journal Interactive.

The six award categories include two prizes for general excellence in online journalism and winning entries must maximise the unique abilities of the internet and represent the 'highest journalistic standards'.

Other categories include awards for breaking news and most creative use of the medium. Invitations are also sought for entries to the category of 'enterprise journalism'. 'This category honours stories that either break news, are based on the reporters' own exclusive investigations or offer compelling and original analysis and interpretation,' the ONA said.
